In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF is the process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus.

Pursuing an IVF cycle can seem overwhelming at first, but you aren’t alone. At Primecare Fertility Clinic, our goal is to provide the highest quality fertility treatments. Our team also offers educational tools and emotional support to our patients.

Most of the treatments and procedures involve the woman. However, our fertility center encourages the partner to also take part in an in vitro fertilization cycle. Daily injections, frequent appointments, ultrasounds and blood tests are all part of the process for the female partner. She must also undergo an egg retrieval and an embryo transfer. To support her, we encourage the partner to administer the injections and attend appointments whenever possible. This treatment is an exciting commitment that couples make to each other as they work together to fulfil their dream of having a baby.

Why IVF?

There are many different causes of infertility. Some of them indicate that in vitro fertilization may be the treatment of choice. For example, a tubal obstruction means the sperm and the egg cannot meet in the fallopian tube. IVF allows our team to bypass the tube, which can help make pregnancy possible.

This advanced fertility treatment can also treat a very low sperm count in the male partner. Embryologists in the laboratory place sperm with the eggs in a petri dish. As a result, the sperm doesn’t need to swim through the cervix, uterus and into the fallopian tube to fertilize the egg. During the cycle, embryologists can also perform intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This laboratory procedure involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg.

Additionally, in vitro fertilization is often the quickest route to pregnancy for a woman who is over 35. It can also help patients with unexplained infertility, especially if they have undergone several unsuccessful attempts with fertility medications and intrauterine insemination (IUI). As you explore your treatment options, you and your partner will work with your doctor to determine whether this fertility treatment is right for you. As part of this process, all patients and their partners must first complete a thorough infertility evaluation.

Testing is a must before beginning fertility treatments

You may have already completed most of the required testing with your initial fertility evaluation. Your nurse will let you know if anything else needs to be done before beginning IVF.

If you have had a hysterosalpingogram (HSG), you will be invited to review the results to rule out the possibility that you have a hydrosalpinx. Your partner will have a semen analysis to assess his sperm concentration, motility and morphology, and a semen culture to check for the presence of bacteria.

Our team will perform a trial transfer to measure the depth of the uterine cavity. This will help determine where the embryo will be transferred during the actual cycle. The doctor will order blood tests for you and your partner.

If you’re ready to explore fertility treatments, we look forward to helping you begin your journey to parenthood.
