A Mystery Puzzle
Unexplained infertility is like a mystery puzzle that leaves everyone, even the doctors, scratching their heads. Well, it seems like the reproductive system is playing hide and seek.
Does it seem like the time to bring everything, including your prayers and positive psychology, to the table? Yes, we think so if you have not done that already, because the doctors would also be glad to know that you are now confident that if making babies the old-fashioned way is not working out, you need not worry! There are plenty of other options available, getting a little help from fertility science. After all, who needs blind luck when you have got modern medicine on your side?
Demystifying the Puzzle
So truly, there is a condition of unexplained infertility, when doctors cannot find a specific cause for a person’s or couple’s difficulty getting pregnant. Despite undergoing fertility tests, no obvious reasons for infertility have been identified. However, there are treatment options available, including fertility medication, lifestyle changes, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and assisted reproductive technology (ART) which include in vitro fertilization (IVF).
To diagnose unexplained infertility, both partners undergo comprehensive fertility evaluations. These evaluations typically show that there are no structural issues with the uterus, regular ovulation occurs, the fallopian tubes are open, the egg count is good, hormonal levels are normal, and semen analysis is normal.
Prevalence of Unexplained Infertility
The exact prevalence of unexplained infertility varies, but it is estimated that around 10–30% of couples trying to conceive fall into this category.
Possible reasons could include undiagnosed underlying conditions, mild endometriosis, issues with cervical mucus, egg quality, sperm quality, uterine lining, or poorly timed intercourse. Sometimes there may be no identifiable cause, or the cause may be challenging to diagnose or treat.
The diagnosis of unexplained infertility involves a series of tests, including medical history, physical exams, hormone level checks, evaluation of reproductive organs, semen analysis, ovarian reserve testing, and monitoring ovulation.
Treatment options
The good news is that getting pregnant is still possible, even with unexplained infertility. Fertility treatments, such as IUI and ART, have shown success rates. In fact, studies have shown that 92% of couples with unexplained infertility who underwent fertility treatments eventually had a child.
ART treatment options for unexplained infertility, as well as medication to stimulate egg production and ovulation have worked magic. Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, limiting caffeine, and reducing stress, can also improve fertility. While it may not be possible to prevent unexplained infertility, certain factors like maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol use, and reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections can improve overall fertility.
Consult with Fertility Specialist
It is important to communicate your fertility concerns with a fertility specialist, who can guide you through the appropriate steps and recommend treatments based on your specific situation. Seeking a second opinion is also a valid option if you receive a diagnosis of unexplained infertility.
Do not give up hope; unexplained infertility is not the end of the road for child bearing.
